Why he got elected and will again
Ok, I know, everyone has an opinion about everything, including Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. You’ll read this ones reason for hating him, that ones reason for loving him and the middle of the road excusers along the way. I’m here to state the not so obvious. Not going to say I love or hate the man, no, not I. Just want to say something about him that is the proverbial elephant in the room, that no one wants to fess up to. Why Rob Ford was elected to office in the first place and why he will win again next time around. This is not me saying I would vote for him or not. This is not me saying I like the man or not. This is me saying why I think he remains as popular as he is and why I believe he got elected in the first place and probably will next time around.
Lets face it, there’s plenty of big money around. Toronto is blessed with an abundance of well to do, well connected high ups who have lots of push and pull to get things done just the way they want. A golf game here, a dinner there, so and so’s over for cocktails and a visit to so and so’s for the same, all the while using these social events and get togethers to push an agenda of one sort or another. It’s the way the world turns. Isn’t it?
Is that how it is for every man woman and child in a big city like Toronto? Here’s something to chew on:
What if an unlikely guy with a big belly, who drinks beer and has a big mouth when talking to the establishment throws his name into the ring for city mayor? What if that guy says the gravy train is over if he gets elected? Here’s what I say will happen;
His less than eloquent ways will segregate him from the high up powerful establishment types and the media that support those high ups, because they are owned by the high ups and establishment will start to bash the plain speaking un eloquent Mayor with the big belly and loose tie.
Is it possible that we fail to notice that despite his families successful business and apparent deep pockets, the Mayor, Rob Ford refused to own a high end vehicle or use city paid security detail until threats on his life made it impossible not too. That the guy still lives in the same medium sized house he’s been in with his family for years before becoming mayor. While mid Etobicoke is far from ghetto it is also not Rosedale or the Kingsway. I’m pretty certain Rob Ford could easily live in those neighborhoods if he so chooses.
Then there’s the high school football team he coached, until media made it impossible for the team to function normally, and he was asked to step aside. Rob Ford was seriously pummeled for his City Council attendance short comings because he was out coaching the team he loved.
Take the most recent drunken stroll down the Danforth during the annual Taste of the Danforth Greek festival. Not going to condone the drunken stupor out on the street but what I noticed was that there he was alone. Alone. No security, no body guards, no agents in the distance watching out for him. Nope. Noooooobody! (As another famous former mayor would say.)
There is a guy who just wanted to be with there like everyone else, not withstanding his position as the mayor of the big smoke itself, he was just out there having fun.
Let me state something very clearly here. He was drunk and in public. Not cool Rob Ford. Nope. Not cool. Another thing, the allegations about cocaine use are still unproven and in this land we have a charter which says he’s innocent until proven, so, the day may yet come when he gets caught with the smoking gun, or pipe, whichever. You know what I mean. Until then here is my point:
Rob Ford, love him or hate him is Mr common Joe who is not a card carrying high up who mingles with high society and pulls strings here and there to control the world around him, or so it appears. He is wealthy. He certainly does use his influence to get stuff done, like the work done on his family businesses front driveway using city crews for a big wing ding the Fords were hosting. I’m talking about the impression the majority of voters sees in the man. That fact that he is like most guys. Most guys can relate to a mayor who has a few beers (right or wrong). Most guys can relate to a Mayor who texts while driving (wrong for sure but something most do weather admitted or not). Most voters can relate to a guy who takes time off work to coach the high school team he’s been coaching for years.
And finally, most guys can relate to a Mayor who like hundreds of thousands who attended the Taste of the Danforth, just wanted to enjoy some of that fun too.
I’m not a citizen of the city of Toronto, but looking in from the outside I have to say there is a side of Rob Ford that most people can relate too or understand and that is the reason I believe he was elected and will be again baring a major screw up bigger than what has already transpired. I believe there are high ups with multiple university degrees and long corp executive track records who have far greater qualifications to run the City of Toronto effectively, but what most of us know as fact is that most who have attained the office of mayor have quickly become swallowed up in the muck of greed and power and quickly forget the promises they gave to get elected in the first place. The smug smiles of the high powered well connected mucketymucks who glad hand and smooch their way into office only then to spend years patronizing their powerful friends and pad their own futures down a slippery and slimy road.
Rob Ford is not that kind of guy. He may be all screwed up in his own personal kind of way and it may cost him his job one day, but till then he is seen as forgivable. It’s just Rob Ford, etc.
We have a mayor in the small town where I live who is pretty low profile. She isn’t much of a headliner or a headline seeker. I guess that’s the way I like a mayor to be, but in the big city to the west of us the stakes are much much higher and Rob Ford is the guy everyone wants to hate. The moving target. The obvious duck. I say he will continue as he has and when the next election comes around, and he’s up against the establishment hopefuls, my guess is that Rob Ford will prevail yet again. In a way, he’s the devil we know.

The Pine Tree Painter.
How did I become known as the Pine Tree Painter? You could say I paint a lot of Pine Trees, that would be true. I paint a lot of other things too, but Pine Trees, Spruce Trees, Birch and others seem to be a continuous string in what i do. I just like the way they stand there like a custodian of the land. or a greeter to nature. So, I continue down the path with the Pine Tree Painter name on my head, It's ok.
