on this painting I am using no thinners, only the pure oil paint. Although there is a thin layer of sealer on the masonite, the oil still penetrates enough to deepen the visual experience. The result is deeper darks, richer rusts and reds.

When I was a kid, back in the 60's in Toronto it was possible  on occasion to go out at night into the back yard and view the Northern Lights. Today if you live within 60 miles of Toronto you will not see them. Too much "visual noise" and pollution.
This scene is from an experience I had many years ago north of Bancroft. Over a small lake the night sky waited as if for the performance of light. There they came, those dancing ribbons of light we know as the "Northern Lights".

At the north end of Canoe Lake there is an old saw mill, or the remains of one. There is just beyond that the posts of what once was a busy railway bridge which brought workers and supplies to the logging camps on the lake.
This painting is the bog around the west side of that point.
Thank you to Roy and Holly for their wonderful hospitality to me those three days last summer where I was able to gather this subject matter.
