Jack Reid
Star on the Walk of Fame
Tueday, Sept. 16th, 2014
Today I was so proud to accept, on behalf of my late uncle Jack Reid, his Star on Brampton's Walk of Fame. Along with Rohinton Mistry Author, Scott Thompson (Actor in Kids in the Hall), The REAL Russell Peters(Comedian), Ms. Keshia Chante, and Mr Scott Lale (Canadian Actor). It was such a pleasure to see my uncles name and star permanently placed into the Entrance way to the Rose Garden Theatre in Brampton.
I would also like to say how wonderful to meet all of these recipients, and how I particularly enjoyed spending a great part of the time speaking one on one with Rohinton Mistry, a real gentleman.
Here are pictures from our wonder day:

Dedication To Jack H. Reid
This is jack Reid on the left and myself on the right, in 1990
There have been many great artists in oil and watercolour to come from this great land we call Canada. As an artist I ask the same question we all do when contemplating the icons of our profession: What would I do if I could spend a day with that person I admire and respect so much. For most of us we will never get the opportunity to do such a thing.
I, however, have had such an opportunity. In fact from the time that my Mother took me in the car to visit her artist brother at his home in Mississauga, Ontario I have had the opportunity to spend many days with the man whom I consider to be the greatest watercolourist Canada has ever produced. He has received the Canadian Governor Generals award for his work; he has paintings in the private collection of Queen Elizabeth in Windsor Castle, in England. His list of accomplishments are far too many to list here, such as the thirty five thousand budding artists he has taught in his Saturday workshops and on painting trips around the world.
His name is Jack H. Reid, but I call him Uncle.
Jack has gone on to his home in heaven now and I miss him dearly, but in me he has placed a burning desire to paint, to share the world I live in with others through my watercolour paper and canvases. I will forever be in his debt for the gift of time and so many other things, words cannot express. I will forever hold up the torch he carried for over forty years. Though I am a mere shadow of Jack, I will attempt for the rest of my days to honor his impact and influence on my life. Starting with this page which presents only a few of the many thousands of watercolours he gave to the world.
I love you Uncle Jack. I will truly miss you. I thank God for you and what you have given me.

Jack Reid in his prime:
This is how I best remember Jack. At his table (which is now mine) in his studio in Brampton on Steeles Ave. I always recall the skylight he had over his work space providing even bright light all day long. He always believed in doing away with clutter. "Your table needs to be clear at all times so you can always paint".
This print of a picture of my uncle Jack was presented to me Jan. 2014, now in my private collection.

Jack Reid's last drawing table where many great watercolours were painted.
One of my prized possessions and I use it to this day for all of my small oil paintings.
I
One of Jack's many quips about life, Those who knew him knew he always had a saying about everything. A story to go with anything and a joke to express anything.
This one he inscribed right into the table surface.

It is little known by those who love the watercolour works of the late Jack Reid, but the years before his transition into watercolour as a career, Jack had quite a successful career as a graphic artist. Recently I came to meet a partner in graphics of Jack Reid who provided me with a number of images of large scale projects with which he and Jack Reid had created. For your pleasure I am proud to post those images here: (Very Special thanks to Leo Lajunen for this wonderful contribution.)
Never below a challenge
Jack Reid was never below a good challenge. Including doing a painting on the nose cone of a small airplane! I'll let me friends, Ken and Gail tell the story:
"I called Jack back in 2005 to ask if he could paint a portrait of my father in law...... ON a spare nose cone of his airplane which he had left my wife. Over the phone, Jack seemed skeptacle but by the time I went to see him, he seemed to welcome the challange.
This was a surprise gift for my wife.
I dropped off the nose cone and some pictures of my father in law with his airplane.
About a week later Jack called me at work to say he wanted to try to create a painting for me.
It was about a month later when Jack asked if I could stop by to see his painting. Needless to say it was amazing. Jack had incorporated my father in laws two planes flying along with two paintings of my father in laws image as well.
When I brought my wife to meet Jack, he was so excited to unveil the nose cone for my wife and she was so touched (as I was) with what Jack had created.
My wife and I are so glad that we had the prevlige of meeting Jack.
The painting he created for us will be handed down through our family along with his legacy. "
